Holocaust Memorial Day

On Monday 27 January, Miss Oldham and Mrs Payne took 14 pupils from Chulmleigh College to represent our school community at this year’s annual Holocaust Memorial Day. This year, it commemorated 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. We started the day at the beautiful Exeter Cathedral with a welcome from the Dean and speeches from pupils in Devon. We also heard from Chaz Singh who told us about the Sikh Princess who helped Jewish families to escape Nazi Germany. After a short walk, we went to the Southernhay United Reformed Church where we heard a fascinating talk from Stewart Raine who told the story of his friend called Otto Deutsch who was a Kindertransport Child. We all listened in awe of his experience being evacuated from Vienna in Austria. After a quick lunch in the church, we had time to revisit the Cathedral before going to the Jewish Synagogue. There we heard from the Rabbi who talked us through some of the key features of the synagogue and pupils had the chance to go up and see the Torah.
